FESTIVALS and HEALTH
October 30, 2026
Festivals in Nepal are a time of joy, family gatherings, traditional foods and cultural celebrations. However, changes in eating habits, busy schedules, travel and environmental exposure can lead to various health problems. With a few simple precautions, we can enjoy the festive season while protecting our health.
Why festivals affect health?
Three patterns drive most festival-time health problems:
• Food changes: much more meat, oil, salt and sugar than usual, plus fasting that is followed by large meals.
• Travel and crowds: long bus rides on winding roads, packed markets and temples, and changing weather as autumn cools.
• Risky activities: alcohol, swings, firecrackers and open flames.
Common Health Problems During Festivals and Their Remedies
1. Digestive Problems: Overeating, oily foods and irregular meals may cause acidity, bloating and indigestion.
Remedy: Eat balanced meals, control portion sizes, drink sufficient water and maintain regular meal times.
2. Increased Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure: Excessive sweets, salty snacks and rich foods can make diabetes and hypertension more difficult to manage.
Remedy: Limit sugar and salt, choose healthier food options, monitor health as advised and continue prescribed medicines.
3. Foodborne Illnesses: Improper food handling and storage can cause food poisoning, diarrhea and vomiting.
Remedy: Wash hands, use clean water, cook food thoroughly and store leftovers safely.
4. Respiratory Problems: Smoke, dust and air pollution may trigger coughing, allergies and asthma.
Remedy: Avoid unnecessary smoke exposure, keep indoor spaces well-ventilated and take extra precautions if you have a respiratory condition.
5. Dehydration and Fatigue: Travelling, fasting, inadequate sleep and prolonged outdoor activities can cause weakness and dizziness.
Remedy: Drink adequate water when permitted, get sufficient rest and avoid excessive physical exertion.
6. Burns and Accidental Injuries: Cooking activities, open flames, electrical decorations and fireworks can cause injuries.
Remedy: Handle fire and electrical equipment carefully, supervise children and keep flammable materials away from flames.
7. Stress and Mental Fatigue: Financial pressure, family responsibilities and busy schedules may affect emotional well-being.
Remedy: Plan ahead, share responsibilities, maintain a reasonable budget and make time for relaxation and family connection.
